I'm an experienced software developer interested in writing a program to do live technical analysis and give me indications on when and what to trade. This type of program is known to many as an Expert Advisor (EA).
There are several trading platforms out there that support EA's and the programming skills needed to write one are trivial for me. What I need is a good way to back test the EA's I develop. It seems to me like the best way to do this is to get my hands on the tick data on at least all the major currency pairs for the past 6 months or even a year. Is there a place where I can download this data for free (or cheap)? If not, is there a trading platform that will allow me to extract tick data from the past and save it? Is there a better approach I'm not considering?
I understand there are pitfalls and risks to back testing such as the fact that bars that are still forming can change direction, and past performance doesn't guarantee future performance. But I still believe it can be useful.
Thanks for reading.
