The last flash crash .. if you can call it that was related to the CHF .. and from my recollection the SNB caused it by pulling the rug to teach the so called specs a lessson. So im not so sure they are desperately trying to figure anything out.

their dailyfx plus showed that almost 50 traders were long for ever 1 that was short. usually it is more like 3 traders long 1 short but they like many others were not thinking 2000 pips more like 200. just goes to show anything can happen.

a 2000 pip drop was pretty unexpected .. even by the big banks .. not sure can be called a fm though .. no doubt they will try though, But fxcm could see the massive build up of 1 sided longs on this so they could have hedged it better perhaps.
