Another consideration is that it pre-empts Biden's self-proclaimed Irish-root, chest-pumping infatuation in intentionally getting involved.
Brexit: UK's Gove says agreement in principle on all issues in withdrawal agreement
- DaJoWaBa commented Dec 8, 2020
Yes, I quoted it as being a pressure gambit, even IF it did force the issue on making sure that the EU also faced up to the practical realities it implied. The difference now is that it's cleared up as no longer being a Deal/No deal fulcrum.
Brexit: UK's Gove says agreement in principle on all issues in withdrawal agreement
- DaJoWaBa commented Dec 8, 2020
Winding it up a bit? Democracies have more of a habit of changing tack than autocracies do. In the UK, the majority of the proposed laws are brought to the house(s) by the government and it's quite within their remit to withdraw them, despite or ...

Derr, error: should have finished . . . . "their own gravy-boat being removed."
UK Johnson: I'm always hopeful...but to be honest, the situation is very tricky"
- DaJoWaBa commented Dec 8, 2020
What many overlook though is that any deal is relevant ONLY to that moment in time. If people stick to something that is no longer fit for purpose then they will fall foul of competition. Snooze, you lose. It's a profound thought relating to the ...

Thumbs up for bringing reasoned comment to the forum. I have an observation to make: any mention of 'good' or 'bad' as an adjective attached to 'deal' is indicating their prejudiced position. I want there to be a deal more than I do not but I have ...

There wasn't a particular need to do so as it's not controlled by some central government agency. Markets find their own way, only politicians mess it about. Europe is not the only fish market in the world. The rest of the world eats fish too. I eat ...

Re NTB's yes BUT then route of least resistance takes precedence. The product will make its way to other markets where the demand always existed but for which supply could not be provided as it all went elsewhere.

You MIGHT be right that initially politics and border police may choose to complicate things but I'd rely on the globally accepted rule-of-thumb in economics of demand and supply winning out in the longer term. Do Parisiens want fish on their tables? ...

Don't take the rhetoric from either side of the negotiating table at face value. The increasing gossip releases or statements of positions are designed to play to the electorates or to try to affect the psyche of the negotiating teams. This one is ...

Brexit: It's nearly now or never for UK-EU trade deal
- DaJoWaBa commented Dec 2, 2020
You make some good points and it all makes for a complex network of triggers or known and unknown consequences. I accept that the set up may not have been there but how could it have been when the Brexiteers were not in control at the time of the ...
Barnier To Tell EU Ambassadors: There May Be No Brexit Deal

Let's first and foremost be clear about one thing: I was not condoning nor will I ever condone or glorify whatever methods that GB took to find itself with an empire. With regard to the 'opium wars', which PRoC is determined to use as PR, take a ...

It's certainly not an empire as was once the case but it is still part of the G7. The empire existed because the UK went in search of free trade and then drove home various market advantages (which included a nimble strong navy and merchant sea ...

Whilst that is a valid belief, it tends to rest only in the minds of those who ARE in the 'Larger' camp, whether it's a country, a business, a family, whatever. It doesn't make it right in the sense of whether it pays off in the long run. It's why ...
Barnier To Tell EU Ambassadors: There May Be No Brexit Deal

Until a deal gets confirmed then the default position is "there MAY be a deal or there may NOT be a deal", so this isn't really a change in position. Ping-pong over-sensitivity. Creates plenty of opportunity, though.
