By 5 min SMA, I presume you mean the 5 period SMA. The price movement above/below the 5 period SMA, are you talking about the current price candle, and not the next 30M candle? SO one should not wait until the current candle completes...

From what I understand, the value does vary, there is no fixed value to trade the news. I do not understand where one would start to determine whether to go short or long based upon a certain value being too low or high.

Just google for the indicator you are interested in, some places describe it better than others. THere are many indicators in this forum and others which have indicators which even I do not know what they do, I just go by the rules if given....

From my testing, one needs to exit out of positions manually to avoid big losses. The results are very good if the pairs trend very well, but that had not been the case for some time....
