Disagree, it can save you some transaction costs and supply some peace of mind for longer term positions, nothing to do with wrong entries or scariness, just with volatility within a trend. But I guess there are few long term traders here....

Technically You are right, though I find there are some mental advantages in hedging or net-positioning, keeping your long term position and hedging it during retraces....
