That's a very idea to make sure you dont trade counter-trend. I don't think it's enough, but it's certainly a beginning. I follow a similar approach myself too.

I personally exited a USDJPY position at +4 pips prior the NFP because I am not up to risk my money with that lottery. It looked like a good entry from a technical point of view, but common sense > T.A. in my opinion!

I personally trade the breakout upon the first retrace: breakout -> pullback -> continuation. I only trade breakouts in the direction of the trend - discard if against the trend or no trend at all.

Considering what's about to hit the wires in few moments, and considering yesterday's extremely thin volume (4th July), let's just say that whoever trades GBP crosses today is highly "risk-tolerant"

"playing it safe" and entering a trade prior a potentially-100-pip-spike-within-the-minute event is an oxymoron, my friend. There is nothing "safe" about entering a position sandwiched right in between the 4th of July and BoE statement.
