I don't think he was suggesting that >50% winrate was needed, but that the value of wins just needed to be greater than the value of losses. As did I, and it lead to me missing out on much of the euro drop.

It has nothing to do with amount of capital, they're simply trading a longer timeframe than you. They also may choose a larger equivalent stop (i.e. two people trading the same timeframe will differ of size of stop).

ATR might be lagging, but as you said it's all on the chart. Not in trendlines, but in the candles. Looking at the daily, it should be obvious that it is currently far less volatile than it was in May. A week of May alone could cover June's action.
