I've never heard of that happening. I suppose each provider can configure their machines as they will. It sounds like they had something running on the screen saver, which you should disable anyway. It's your VPS, you should be able to stay logged ...

Of course this will depend on the provider and their network management policy, but as I said 6 posts up, it is my opinion that VPS's are SAFER than desktops. (scroll up)
