China Central to IEA's Peak Fossil Fuel Forecast

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says a slower pace of economic growth in China is one of the key reasons for its forecast that demand for all fossil fuels will peak before 2030. In its latest World Energy Outlook the IEA notes that over the past decade China accounted for about two-thirds of the growth in global oil consumption, one-third of growth in gas demand, and that it has also been the "dominant player" in coal markets.
