Renewables Win, LNG Loses in Japan Power Mix

Japan has proposed new targets for its electricity generation mix by 2030 which increase the share of renewables at the expense of LNG and coal. The draft plan -- which still needs to be approved -- is intended to help Japan make good on its pledge to achieve a 46% reduction in its greenhouse emissions by 2030 (from 2013 levels) en route to net-zero emissions by 2050. Renewables' share of the country's power mix would rise to 36%-38% by 2030 from a previous target of 22%-24% in that year.
