Keep in mind that the ONS data is seasonally adjusted i.e. they account for seasonal effects (e.g. Christmas spending, Cyber Monday...). The trend has been down since April '21. This is pretty grim for a consumer-based economy.

I'm surprised the consensus was 4.75 considering the CPI data. 5% shouldn't have been a surprise. BoE doing what I imagine any central bank would do. The problem for the UK is that this shows that the govt has probably decided to let (or facilitate) ...

Completely agree. I'm not sure which big fat elephant you're referring to, so I'll give my take (which is very UK-biased). Someone once pointed out that 'success breeds inertia'. In my business life, I see it all of the time, for example, in the ...

I take your comments as useful analysis. I find most political discourse ends up being too binary, and one size doesn't fit all.

Agree with most of what you are suggesting - I do sometimes exaggerate a point to test out thoughts and ideas - and the reality is that I want to help my children and give them an unfair advantage ;-)

I'm less worried about someone being able to earn a lot of money in their lifetime than I am about passing that wealth onto heirs. IMO inherited wealth is the root cause of inequality. We currently rely on 'brilliant' leaders to come from a very ...

This news isn't the news. Every developed nation will have civil contingency plans for this type of event. The problem arises when politicians get involved, and do things like 'fast-track' procurement, or spin facts to suit their political ...
