Alive and kicking only in one form. The country could be a great source of good and prosperity for huge numbers but it's throttled by its leadership and cronies. Yes and before that there were the Barbary slave trade by Barbary pirates from North Africa in slave raids on ships and by raids on coastal towns from Italy to the Netherlands, Ireland and the southwest of Britain, as far north as Iceland and into the Eastern Mediterranean

Just as Putin has agreed he pre-planned the Ukrainian war but only stole Crimea as his army was not yet ready for a full war and he needed the time to build up his army and his financial strength
Bear in mind that Russia has in the last 100 years invaded 14 countries. About 1 every 8 years so it seems to be what they are about
