Press release No. 037 of 30 January 2023

Gross domestic product (GDP), 4th quarter of 2022
-0.2% on the previous quarter (price, seasonally and calendar adjusted)
0.5% on the same quarter a year earlier (price adjusted)
1.1% on the same quarter a year earlier (price and calendar adjusted)

WIESBADEN – The gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022 on the third quarter of 2022 after adjustment for price, seasonal and calendar variations. After the German economy managed to perform well despite difficult conditions in the first three quarters, economic performance slightly decreased in the fourth quarter of 2022. Especially the price, seasonally and calendar adjusted private consumption expenditure, which had supported the German economy in the first three quarters, was lower than in the previous quarter. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the price adjusted GDP rose by 1.8% in 2022. Economic growth was 1.9% after adjustment for price and calendar effects. This means a downward revision of the original result by 0.1 percentage points.

Gross domestic product increased year on year

GDP in the fourth quarter of 2022 was up a price adjusted 0.5% and a price and calendar adjusted 1.1% from the fourth quarter of 2021. One of the reasons for the difference between these figures and the non calendar adjusted value is that the number of working days available in the fourth quarter of 2022 was an average 1.2 days smaller than in the same quarter a year earlier.

Due to the continuing Covid-19 crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine, these results are subject to larger uncertainties than usual.

Revision of previous results

In addition to calculating data for the fourth quarter of 2022, the Federal Statistical Office reviewed the results published earlier and included new statistical information in the calculations for the remaining quarters of 2022, as usual. This resulted in a 0.1 percentage point change of the quarterly price adjusted GDP published previously for the third quarter. Detailed data on the recalculations are shown in the table “Comparison between old and new figures” at the end of this press release.
