  • Ukraine calls for path into NATO after Russia masses troops

    From reuters.com

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on NATO on Tuesday to lay out a path for Ukraine to join the Western military alliance, after days in which Russia has massed troops near the conflict-hit Donbass region. Zelenskiy’s comments drew an immediate rebuke from Moscow, which said Kyiv’s approach to NATO could further inflame the situation in Donbass, where violence has increased in recent days. The Pentagon, perhaps due to the sensitivities, flatly declined a request to comment on Zelenskiy’s request at a news briefing. Russian-backed separatists have fought since 2014 against Ukrainian forces in the Donbass, a ... (full story)

Ukraine in NATO would put NATO on the borders of Russia. They applied back in 2008. With Russia as a permanent member of the UN security council, this will go nowhere.

Watch this, a country thousands of miles away from Russia:

March 18, 2021
"Russia warns it will 'have to react' if Bosnia moves to join NATO"
“In the case of practical rapprochement of Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO, our country will have to react to this hostile act,”

what can Ukraine expect from violent neighbors?

Yes this is a long running issue, with potential to VERY seriously raise Russo US/EU tensions.
The UN security Council has no direct input to any such decision by Nato. Current tensions and troop deployments serve at least three immediate Russian objectives, Test new US administration European solidarity and policy on Russian expansionism, pushback against recent sanctions, and stimulate internal regime nationalistic support to prop cracks in Putins power.
IMHO there are very serious dangers in creating a direct Russo-NATO border. which would abolish the status that Ukraine occupies as an effective no-mans-land - buffer between blocs.

I logged in today to FF after months of not visiting this forum and I immediately found 2 funny replies about Russia. Now, let's take a look at what you've written here...

1st) Russia/EU tensions ? lol. EU doesn't want any tension really (neither does Russia) because they'd rather trade and finalize the construction of the NS-2 pipe.

2nd) This point right here shows that you and most people who are not familiar with Russia and have nothing to do with it, don't really understand wtf you talking about.

"Expansionism" ? Lmao, at least in the last 100-150 years, Russia (and Russians) didn't really have the mentality of expanding their territory and exploiting other lands as ehhmm others have done (catch my drift here?). Building ties with other nations ? Absolutely. Trading with them ? Sure. (And yes, these actions can lead to increased influence of Russia on other countries but influence for influence's sake is not the true and direct goal). I guess though US.. ehhm I mean NATO doesn't like it one bit that their status is challenged...

"Stimulate internal regime nationalistic support to prop them cracks" This made me lmao.

This is actually the point of divide between someone who actually lives in Russia or at least wtf he's talking about and someone who has only seen Russia on a map. Putin's popularity is not based on any of that stuff really. Sure, there are people that like to see a "Strong" Russia not taking shit from noone, but that's not why people vote for Vova (Oh yes they do actually vote for him >>SHOCKED FACE<<).

And I left the best one for the end. "there are very serious dangers in creating a direct Russo-NATO border".

Baltic states and Norway must really be feeling the heat day in day out eh ?

Russian economic performance has been so wickedly poor under P that it is now smaller than the Australian economy and lost any claim to 'super power'.

Forced to maintain an image of being important in the world to impoverished Russians P follows a well leafed through manual of maintaining a fortress polit as the great dictator who cannot be challenged. This includes no succession planning, no debate because no opposition survives, no democracy since opposition are killed off or imprisoned, no opportunity for young people to debate policy issues without fear, no hope for greater political freedoms and no alternative but showy military parades, shadow boxing with the West in a craven, cowardly manner, suppression at home and in the satellite countries, and lying propaganda which is both obvious and treacherous.

I am aware that the NATO is technically independent of the UN, but I think in the making of the sausage, Russia will use it's power in the UN to influence member states in NATO because there is overlap. Soft pressure, so to speak. If Russia thinks that Ukraine might have a real shot at NATO, they may not waste time and simply invade them directly. That would put us in a decision where we might have to respond in order to support the EU. This, as you alluded to, could get ugly fast.

You must be joking. In the last hundred years Russia constantly was at war. attacking Finland, Ukraine, Baltic countries, Caucasus nations , practically occupying whole of Eastern Europe, constant African “adventures”, birthing most of the current terrorist organizations, just a partial list of their “achievements “. that’s not even mentioning of millions of its own citizens tortured and killed.
You are either a paid Russian troll or utterly ignorant of Russian history.
